On October 9th, a netizen posted Weibo that a giant panda was so thin that its bones could be clearly seen at the Qinling Wildlife Park in Xi ‘an, and three photos of the giant panda were attached. In the photos, the giant panda looked listless and its figure was not "round". On the afternoon of the 10th, the relevant person in charge of Xi ‘an Qinling Wildlife Park responded to the Beijing Youth Daily reporter that the photo of the giant panda taken by netizens was true, because the giant panda was old, its teeth were aging, and it suffered from pulpitis before the National Day. It was not good to eat for several days, so it was so thin.
A bony giant panda
The reporter of Beiqing Daily saw from the photos provided by netizens that this emaciated giant panda was standing in the museum, and its coat color was dim and it looked listless. As can be seen in one of the photos, the panda was thin enough to see the ribs clearly.
"Is the national treasure treated like this?" "This panda has subverted my cognition. Aren’t all pandas round?" After this Weibo was issued, it attracted the attention of many netizens.
On the afternoon of the 10th, the reporter of Beiqing Daily contacted the relevant person in charge of Xi ‘an Qinling Wildlife Park. The person in charge said that the photos of the giant panda taken by netizens are true, but this giant panda’s thinness is not caused by human factors, because this giant panda is older, its teeth are aging, and it got pulpitis before the National Day, and it can’t eat much for several days.
"After we found out, we invited a special doctor to treat it. At present, the panda’s body is recovering, and the amount of bamboo and feces is normal." The person in charge said that these days, the giant panda is taking good care of itself in the inner room of the panda stadium and will not show it to tourists. When it recovers, it will be exhibited soon.
Expert: Dental disease is the most serious threat to giant pandas.
Yong Yan, a senior engineer of Foping National Nature Reserve in Shaanxi Province and director of the Giant Panda Research Center, told the reporter of Beiqing Daily that dental disease is the most serious disease that threatens the giant panda’s health. Once some wild giant pandas get dental diseases or dental caries inflammation, it is difficult to eat, and if they don’t eat for a long time, their nutrition can’t keep up, and even lead to death. He introduced that pulp disease is a disease of pulp tissue, including pulpitis, pulp necrosis and pulp degeneration. When the pulp is in acute inflammation, the blood vessels are congested and exudates accumulate, which leads to the increase of pressure in the pulp cavity, which makes the nerves compressed and stimulated by inflammatory exudates, which makes the pain extremely intense. It is possible that the pandas in Xi ‘an Qinling Wildlife Park will be "skinny" for a few days because of pulpitis.
"As the saying goes, toothache is not a disease, but it hurts to kill people." Yong Yan said that although this statement is not correct, it does show that toothache is very painful from one side. The pain of a panda suffering from dental disease is the same as that of a human, which will affect its sleep and diet, so it needs to be found and treated in time.
